Dr M Azarpeyvand  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol. Applicants should be of outstanding quality and exceptionally motivated.

This PhD project aims to understand, at a fundamental level, the mechanisms of noise generation from the leading and trailing edges of high lift aerofoils and investigate the possibility controlling the flow and reducing the noise at its source using passive flow/noise control methods, such as serrations and porous treatments. The project will involve experimentation and LES-CFD simulations. Both aerodynamic and noise measurements will be performed of the test models using microphones, hot-wire anemometry and particle image velocimetry. This project is part of a larger project, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering (2011-2016), aimed at better understanding of aerodynamic noise generation and development of novel techniques for controlling or minimising the noise, with application to wind turbine and contra-rotating propeller technologies.

The studentship is open to applicants who are UK citizens or EU citizens resident in the UK for at least 3 years. The studentships are renewable for up to 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory progress, and will provide for tuition fees, a tax-free stipend of at least £13590 per year (subject to annual increase. Overseas students may apply, but any studentship awarded to a student liable for overseas fees would be limited to waived fees only.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Mahdi Azarpeyvand, Email: [Email Address Removed] , Tel: +44 (0) 1223761564.

General enquiries should be emailed to [Email Address Removed].
