About the Project

With the tremendous growth of computing resource and flood of electronic data, there is huge demand for the automatic discovery of patterns in observed data through the use of machine learning algorithms. Many machine learning algorithms have been developed over last ten years, for example, decision trees and support vector machines. However, most of these algorithms just give predictions without any confidence information. Not knowing the confidence of the predictions makes it difficult to measure and control risk of error using a decision rule. In many real world applications such as medical diagnosis, it is important to know how reliable predictions are.

The proposed research aims to investigate classification and prediction with confidence. The student is expected to study Statistical Learning Theory and Algorithmic Randomness Theory, to develop new learning algorithms and to apply them to process and classify medical information such as microarray and proteomics data.
