Prof D Roberts, Dr Ben Shirley  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

David Roberts and Ben Shirley at Salford, and Stephan Greuter & Barry Hill at RMIT

Themes: Media/Digital, Built & Human Environment, & Energy
Match to Themes: This PhD would develop and study new forms of digital media telepresence to join distant built environments to allow artists to creatively interact at a more human level.

In terms of energy, it looks to remove the need for travel to interact at a creative and social level across a distance. The work will build on successful initial collaboration between the the four proposers which was demonstrated at a workshop in Melbourn in the spring. A joint publication between Roberts and Greuter documenting one aspect of this work has already been accepted at an IEEE/ACM int symp and is in the best paper short list.

The work will capture musicians and dancers with cameras to drive avatars from them in a virtual world that perform within a shared visual and musical world. Methods will scale from simple solutions using the Microsoft Kinect cameras to full blown 360 deg immersive telepresence. The latter will combine our cutting edge research with the lucky chance that both Salford and RMIT have large hexagonal immersive display systems. Ultimately we will look to demonstrate the work between media city and Federation Square Melbourne. An ideal student has just applied for a PhD in this specific area after reading our related publications.

The work would targets outlets such as IEEE Multimedia, IEEE Computer Graphics and Visualisation and MIT Presence Tele-presence and Tele-operation.
