About the Project

Bid for DTA studentship Title: Tele-presence joining the BBC workforce David Roberts & Bruce Weir BBC (Have also invited Peter Barrett from Built Environment and awaiting reply)
Themes: Media/Digital, Built & Human Environment, & Energy

Match to Themes: This PhD would develop and study new forms of digital media telepresence and how they can be sewn into the daily lives of humans in their work and social environments. In terms of energy, by investigating how to better support team work between BBC workers at Media City UK and White City, it would could radically cut into the estimated 187Kg of carbon a year used travelling between the sites.

The Proposed PhD would continue on from a successful DTA funded PhD between the lead proposer and the BBC which was cut short when the student left for a financially more attractive position. In the first 6 months that PhD had generated much excitement and input from the top scientists in both the North and South BBC labs
.
The PhD would look at how people are embodied through telepresence within places where they work and rest. It will study empathy and rapport between people interacting through novel technology it develops. We are particularly interested in what happens in people's brains when they interact and how different ways of integrating or juxtaposing place and technology change this. An ideal student has just applied for a PhD in this specific area after reading our related publications.

The work would targets outlets such as IEEE Multimedia, IEEE Computer Graphics and Visualisation and MIT Presence Tele-presence and Tele-operation
