About the Project

Project Summary:

Older people who are admitted to acute hospital services are vulnerable to the development of reversible continence problems or the reversible deterioration of existing continence problems. If such problems are not effectively tackled whilst in acute care them they may be discharged into the community with a long-term or more serious continence problem which can severely affect their quality of life, increase care burden and raise primary care costs through the need for continence products and services.

Recently an evidence-based tool designed for use in acute care has been published (Fader and Budden 2012) but this has not been subject to testing for reliability and validity. The proposed project aims to assess the items within this tool for content validity, sensitivity to change, reliability and feasibility.

The methods will include a Delphi technique with continence experts, interviews with medical and nursing staff (N=20 for each group) and a pilot study of the final tool after refinements and iterations. The tool incorporates the grade A short continence measurement questionnaire developed for the International Consultation on Incontinence which will be used to assess the effectiveness of the tool in improving incontinence.

The overall aim will be to develop and refine a MTD and patient derived assessment tool that accurately identifies reversible continence problems and leads to a reduction in the number of older people (with and without dementia) who are discharged back to the community.
