About the Project
The manufacturing and processing techniques for new materials often exceed conventional technology barriers, and have to be controlled with increasing precision through modelling, requiring a detailed knowledge of their thermo-physical properties in liquid and solid phases. A significant boost in this research direction is the new international initiative by ESA (European Space Agency) under the ELIPS materials programme. A Greenwich team was invited to be part of ‘THERMOLAB-ISS’ to study the thermo-physical properties of liquid metallic alloys at high temperature. The numerical models developed in this PhD will interface with microgravity experiments performed in microgravity (on the International Space Station, sounding rockets, parabolic aircraft flights and drop towers).
The PhD research will be used to advance 3D spectral numerical models with AC and DC magnetic fields, expanding the skills of predicting fluid dynamic effects in levitated liquid metals where future applications are envisaged: for instance, to enable the magnetic levitation of large amounts of liquid metal, an essential requirement for the mass production of ultra-pure alloy components and high melting temperature metal powders.
The PhD will enable the student participation and future career prospects in the space sciences. She/He will be interacting with a research team from 15 countries representing the world’s leading expertise in space material science and contactless property metrology.
