About the Project

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in health economics research at the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS). We are seeking to attract a PhD candidate of outstanding ability to join an exciting and rapidly expanding programme of international rated research within the Health Economics Group at the University of Exeter.

The PhD studentship aims to gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of wellbeing and its measurement in Economics and Health Economics. It will utilise existing survey datasets of wellbeing indicators in order to analyse the health and socio-economic determinants and the behavioural responses to these that may explain the aggregate trends in wellbeing routinely reported by the Office of National Statistics and will explore through choice-experiments the key determinants of wellbeing for the general population and for individuals suffering from chronic conditions. This PhD studentship is funded by UEMS. The research student will benefit from the strong links UEMS has across the University of Exeter, including the experimental economics laboratory and the ESRC funded Centre for Research on Risk and Ambiguity, both based in the Department of Economics, and also links with The Mood Disorders Centre, the Wellbeing Network and the European Centre for the Environment and Human Health.

The starting stipend for this studentship will be £13,726 p.a. (tax-free). Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, with a minimum 2:1 or above. A masters level award in Health Economics, Psychology or Economics is desirable. The studentship would suit those with an interest in healthcare and health service research, and a specific interest in health economics research. Knowledge of economics, health economics, statistics and/or psychology is desirable. Non UK candidates must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).
