Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
The University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) is seeking to attract PhD candidates to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research. As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).
This PhD programme is a one of two forming a collaboration between UEMS and Shell UK. The research will be jointly supervised by Professor Charles Abraham (UEMS), Dr. Stephen Skippon (Shell Research Ltd.) and Dr. Mathew White (UEMS).
Attitude measurement has been important to understanding personal travel choices. Attitudes have been viewed as relatively stable evaluations (positive or negative). Yet research in social psychology has raised a range of theoretical and methodological questions relevant to attitude measurement. These include the distinctions between implicit and explicit attitudes, cognitive and affective attitudes and demonstration of importance of context (including questionnaire design) to the elicitation and consolidation of salient or relevant attitudes. Yet these issues have not, in general, shaped interpretation of attitude measures in the driving/ transportation literatures. This research programme will explore how critical perspectives on attitude measurement can be used to develop new models of driving attitudes and new perspectives on existing driving attitude research. For example, attitudes may be linked to particular goals and identities and, in different contexts, different goals may be salient, so different attitudes will be expressed. Behavioural choices are unlikely to be consistent with attitudes expressed in relation goals not salient at the point of action. This may account for attitude-behaviour inconsistencies. We anticipate that the project will include a series of quantitative experiments in which goal priority will be manipulated and, in which, we will predict systematic variation in attitude expression. In addition we anticipate that interviews with people who have previously completed attitude measures on driving style and transportation mode choice will be carried out. Qualitative analyses can be used to explore whether, as different identities and goals are rendered salient, participants change their evaluations.
A detailed plan of studies will be developed by the candidate in collaboration of his/her supervisors. As part of the application process candidates should submit a brief (maximum 2,000 word) research proposal, suitable for this PhD, identifying the general question(s) the research will address, what methods would be used and how such studies would extend previous work.
