About the Project

Centre for Applied Social Research
Communication

Overview and rationale
Communication brings together different research strands in Psychology, Speech and Language therapy and Playwork. Areas include children’s language development, social interaction online, conflict resolution, behaviour change, group dynamics, and embodied communication.

Members of the psychology group (Susan Atkinson, Nina Martin, Sabrina Golonka, Andrew Wilson, Sarah James, Nicole
Whitworth) and other colleagues at Leeds Met (Tracey Marsh) are currently working with a local school to evaluate the effectiveness of singing in choir on academic performance, in particular, on language skills. This is a longitudinal project, commissioned by the school to evaluate changes in formal academic measures as well a more nuanced psychological tests, with theoretical and wider technological implications.
