Dr B Bockelmann-Evans, Dr A Babatunde  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

A 3-year PhD studentship is available at Cardiff School of Engineering commencing 1st January 2013. This award is sponsored by EPSRC and Asset International Ltd.

The European Plastic Pipes and Fittings Association (TEPPFA) has recognized the importance of having an insight into the integral environmental aspects encountered during the life-span of particular applications of plastic pipes. To this end, Cardiff University School of Engineering and Asset International Ltd aim to conduct a comprehensive examination of the environmental impacts of Assets pipeline products (Weholite pipes).

The overall aim of the study is to perform a full Life Cycle Assessment for Weholite pipes focusing on the large spectrum diameters (above 1200mm).The project will conduct a cradle to grave life cycle assessment of selected Weholite pipes in order to assess their environmental performance for utility applications including determination of their contribution to global warming. Investigations will be carried out into how the environmental impact of piping systems can be reduced, for example by improved welding techniques and by optimising the design to reduce raw material usage.

The award will cover fees at the Home/EU fee rate and will provide an annual stipend (£13,590 in 2012/13).

Applicants should hold or expect to gain an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (2.1 or 1st class honours) and/or an appropriate Masters level qualification.

Applications should be made online at www.cardiff.ac.uk. Please ensure you quote the studentship reference EPSRC-BBE-12 in the "prospective supervisor" section.
