Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Applications are invited for a fully funded EPSRC PhD studentship in Interaction Design/Human–Computer Interaction within the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee. The successful applicant will join a growing interdisciplinary research group with backgrounds in design and computing, with a strong international research track record.
Project
Second screens are additional devices, such as tablets or mobile phones, used to access content while simultaneously viewing television on a large screen. Use of second screens has increased greatly in recent years, with social media use alongside television viewing being particularly popular. One area affected by this trend is political discourse. For example, a high volume of tweets accompanies BBC’s Question Time and television debates held before the 2010 UK General Election were social media events in their own right.
This project will explore the design of novel second screen interfaces for engagement with political television programming. This will include understanding how second screens and social media are currently used and working with a diverse range of participants to design and evaluate novel second screen interfaces. There is also potential to push beyond just screens and explore how the Internet of Things might be used alongside television broadcasts.
Criteria and Eligibility
The student will be required to employ a range of fieldwork techniques to inform the design of novel interfaces. The ability to develop functional digital prototypes is essential.
Applicants should have a first class degree or good 2:1 and/or an appropriate Masters’ degree in a relevant subject, such as computer science, human–computer interaction (HCI), interaction design or product design.
The award is open to eligible UK/EU nationals and will cover fees and a stipend of approximately £13,863 per annum for 42 months. Full information on eligibility criteria for this scholarship can be found on the RCUK web site: http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/RCUK-prod/assets/documents/documents/TermsConditionsTrainingGrants.pdf
Following interview the successful applicant will also need to apply and meet the University of Dundee’s entry requirements for PhD study.
