About the Project

To be eligible, applicants should have a first-class honours degree in a relevant subject or a 2.1 honours degree plus Masters (or equivalent). Scholarships will be awarded by competitive merit, taking into account the academic ability of the applicant.

The aim is to reduce the use of water in industrial processes in the UK’s water intensive industrial sectors as part of a resource efficiency programme.

In line with the increasing drive for sustainable operations in industry one of the key areas of focus is the use of water within industry. The drivers for this vary depending on industrial sector, availability of water, and the associated economics. In the extreme, water related issues can become business critical for industrial operations. The level of awareness and knowledge of water related metrics varies significantly within different industrial sectors. There are also many tools and methodologies that have been developed and are available for benchmarking performance with respect to water usage. Some of these tools have been developed by, and are within the ownership of commercial organizations but there are also many publicly available tools. The key is to develop a user friendly, relevant and accessible tool that can be used to benchmark performance. The outputs will provide the basis for the improvement in performance with respect to water usage. This is novel research in the Water Industry.

The work will result in a tool which aids resource efficiency and improves overall business competitiveness. It will have national impact as it offers the opportunity to compare the performance of UK operations across the chosen industry sector with respect to water usage and management, allowing operators to benchmark current performance, identify opportunities for improvement and implement the required changes.

It is envisaged that the project will involve desk-based research (identification of current materials, programmes and tools together with the assessment of performance in key sectors and the identification of target sectors); refereed journal output; workshops (awareness raising/data collection); development of a specific water monitoring /management tool; contribution to a dedicated web site as a focal point and communication methodology; teaching-and-learning packages based on the findings from the project.

It is also envisaged that the project could also lead to the definition of a methodology that can be applied to produce the same outputs for sectors not covered by this initial project.
