Competition Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)
About the Project
Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship with the Ultralow Temperature Group at Lancaster University. The successful applicant will work on the Lancaster advanced refrigerators, including the world's coldest dilution refrigerator. Our research focuses on experiments on quantum fluids and solids at record low temperatures. He/she will form part of our team and will be involved in various activities including the operation of our refrigerators, the development of new techniques, and researching various topics of current interest. These include the exotic properties of superfluid 3He and its various analogues with other systems, quantum turbulence, quasiparticle dynamics, `dirty’ superfluid helium-3 in aerogel and quantum plasticity in helium-4.
The Lancaster group is one of the most successful and largest groups worldwide for ULT research with 7 academic staff including 4 professors, 3 research associates, 10 PhD students and highly experienced specialist technical support. The Lancaster Physics department has a world leading research profile, ranked top in the UK by the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.
Funding Notes
Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis and the successful applicant will receive an annual stipend for 3.5 years (£13,726.00 tax free for 2013-14) and UK tuition fees for 3.5 years.
