Prof Andrew Carnell  Applications accepted all year round

About the Project

Applications are invited for a funded 42 month period of research leading to the award of PhD in the Department of Chemistry, University of Liverpool, UK.

Project Description
Amide bonds are of fundamental importance in chemistry and biology and are found in pharmaceuticals, synthetic polymers and biomolecules. This project concerns the development of molybdenum-dependent enzymes to catalyse the formation of amides using a completely novel approach. These enzymes are well known in drug metabolism but have never been exploited synthetically. We will explore and extend the substrate range of these enzymes using mutagenesis techniques. The molybdenum enzymes will be coupled with other enzymes to develop enzyme cascades for sustainable synthesis of important intermediates for drug synthesis.

Training
In addition to further developing synthetic chemistry skills, you will receive additional training in microbiology and molecular biology. The knowledge and skills developed will provide you with a solid foundation for a future academic or industrial career in the field of industrial biotechnology and sustainable synthesis.

Funding Notes
