About the Project
British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence
3-year BHF Centre PhD Studentship
The King’s College London British Heart Foundation (BHF) Centre of Research Excellence offers an outstanding environment for cardiovascular research training. It includes a large number of internationally rated investigators whose expertise encompasses a very broad range of cardiac and vascular biomedicine. The unit performed exceedingly well in the recent RAE, being the only institution to be in the top 3 both on average quality score and research power.
We are inviting applications for a joint project studentship to commence from October 2013 that is co-supervised by a KCL-based supervisor, Prof Kinya Otsu, and a University of Goettingen-based supervisor, Prof Elisabeth Zeisberg, with complementary expertise. All principal supervisors have a strong track record of publications, grant income and successful supervision.
The pathophysiology of inflammation and fibrosis in failing hearts
Prof Kinya Otsu, Prof Elisabeth Zeisberg
Sterile inflammation plays a central role in the genesis of heart failure. We recently found that mitochondrial DNA that escapes from autophagic degradation causes inflammation and heart failure mediated through TLR9 signalling (Nature 485 : 251–255, 2012).
The purpose of this studentship is to examine the relationship among mitochondrial dynamics, autophagy, inflammation, innate immunity, RNA degradation and fibrosis. This molecular mechanism might be also involved in other chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis and cancer. These experiments will be performed on isolated organelles and in cell lines, in gene-targeting animals, and use a range of biological and physiological readouts. The ultimate aim is to identify novel therapeutic targets to treat patients with heart failure.
Candidates must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or good upper 2nd class degree, ideally in biochemistry, or a relevant subject and must meet BHF residency requirements. Current 1st year BHF stipend rates for London are £22,278 pa.
