About the Project

UCL Department / DivisionDivision of Medicine

Specific unit / Sub department: Institute of Nuclear Medicine

Duration of Studentship: 3 years

Stipend: £18,590 per annum for three years.

Vacancy Information

A fully funded EPSRC Industrial CASE studentship is available for development of tracers for imaging of neurodegeneration with positron emission tomography (PET) under supervision of Dr Erik Årstad at University College London, and Dr Sajinder Luthra at GE Healthcare. The funding covers tuition fees, research expenses and a student stipend of £18,590 per annum for three years. Some of the most devastating neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are characterized by progressive loss of structure and function of neurons. The gradual progression of these diseases and the lack of unequivocal symptoms make diagnosis and treatment monitoring challenging. Imaging of neurodegeneration with PET can therefore have significant clinical benefits by providing a means for early diagnosis of disease and monitoring of treatment efficacy. The student will benefit from a thriving multidisciplinary research environment and will get access to state-of-the-art equipment for synthetic chemistry, radiochemical manipulations and imaging
