  Life history strategies in the sea-trout Salmo trutta

About the Project

The trout Salmo trutta is frequently found as both anadromous populations (sea-trout) and freshwater resident populations (brown trout), in the same catchment. In some catchments there is good evidence that these groups represent different life history strategies derived from a single gene pool, for others there is evidence of some genetic differentiation between the anadromous and freshwater-resident individuals and differential habitat use by alternative life-history groups. In year 1, this project will use comparative field approaches to attempt to define the habitat characteristics that promote an anadromous or resident life history. In subsequent years the direction of the project is flexible but will focus on attempting to understand the mechanisms promoting life-history pathway.
The project will be based at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment on Loch Lomondside and at the Loughs Agency in Northern Ireland (approximately 50% time in each location).

Because of funding restrictions the studentship must begin by June 2012.


There will be a significant element of field work in this project.


Funding Notes

This studentship attracts an annual stipend of £13,560 and is open to any suitably qualified candidate from the UK or EU countries with an upper second class BSc degree or better in a relevant biological or environmental topic.
