One of the most significant contemporary public health challenges is the effect of large-scale migration to towns and cities in the developing world, and models suggest that these trends are only set to increase. The majority of migrants end up in unplanned, informal and overcrowded urban and peri-urban areas, which provides environments within which diseases can quickly spread between people, and between people and other animals such as dogs, cats, rodents, small ruminants and chickens.
This interdisciplinary PhD project will seek to examine primary disease risks to emerge from this environment, identify the populations most at risk, and determine the knowledge of disease symptoms, mitigation strategies, health seeking behaviour and treatments in different parts of the population. It will compare two informal settlements around Dar es Salaam and Arusha in Tanzania.
This PhD project would be conducted with strong links to a broader research project investigating diseases transmitted between humans and animals in northern Tanzania, involving an international collaborative team of doctors, vets, biologists, microbiologists and social scientists.
