About the Project

We are inviting applications for a PhD studentship in an accelerator physics research project. You will be jointly supervised by University of Liverpool and STFC Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC).

Project

The project is to develop novel measurement techniques to characterise beam properties at the Electron Beam Test Facility (EBTF). EBTF is a high performance, modular injector facility capable of delivering a highly stable, highly customisable, short pulse, high quality electron beam to a series of test enclosures. The new facility will deliver a capability for the cutting edge development and qualification of advanced accelerator systems, enabling industry to expedite their technology development from prototypes to market ready products. The research work will be based at Cockcroft Institute, Daresbury Laboratory. You will have many opportunities to work with professional accelerator scientists and take part in international collaborations. The project involves both experiments and simulation.

Requirements

You must have a strong interest in practical and computing work. You should have a good university degree (first or upper second class) in physics, engineering or a related subject.

How to Apply

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Kai Hock, [Email Address Removed]. To apply, follow the instructions here: http://www.liv.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/applying/. Indicate Kai Hock for “Supervisor” and Physics for “Department”. We shall contact your referees directly for references.

As this studentship is managed by Cockcroft Institute, which is a collaboration of the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster and Manchester, you will also be considered for studentships in the other two universities.

Funding Notes

Eligibility

The studentship is funded by STFC for 3.5 years, and covers tuition fees and an annual stipend of about £13,590. You must be ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years to be eligible. EU nationals who are not resident in the UK are eligible for fees only. Overseas students will have to pay tuition fees and your own living expenses.
