AACE-AFM-24: Aerodynamic Noise from Tandem Aerofoils (Computational Approach)

Applications accepted all year round

A PhD research project is offered on aerodynamic noise generated by the interactions between two tandem aerofoils in close proximity. The research will make a significant impact on aeroacoustic designs for high-lift devices, e.g. flaps and slats. Due to complex interactions between multiple lifting surfaces, flap/slat noise has not yet been understood in great details. Quieter high-lift devices are now becoming one of the critical issues since the regulations on aircraft noise is increasingly strict. This project aims to provide an in-depth understanding on fundamental noise source mechanisms and obtain novel strategies to control/reduce the noise of high-lift devices by using a canonical model – tandem aerofoils. The research plan is to introduce serrations (wavy profiles) to the trailing edge of the upstream aerofoil and/or to the leading edge of the downstream one, and also to investigate the effects of the geometric changes on the noise characteristics as well as the aerodynamic performance. An optimal set of designs for the leading- and trailing-edge serrations will be identified at the end of the project. The work will be carried out by using a state-of-the-art CFD code that offers high-order accuracy and resolution to allow precise simulations of unsteady fluid flows and the induced sound waves. Euler and Navier-Stokes simulations will be performed by using parallel computing techniques in the University’s supercomputer IRIDIS3.
