The ecology underpinning conservation management of rare freshwater fishes

Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

The basic ecological processes in an ecosystem which supports rare species are largely ignored in the management strategies for the species concerned. This project will attempt to identify and quantify the principal ecological drivers supporting rare freshwater fish species in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland. One focus of the study will be to attempt to identify appropriate units of conservation in species that are high variable in phenotype. The main study species will be the Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, smelt Osmerus eperlanus and shad (Alosa sp.).
The work will adopt a combination of manipulative experimental and field study approaches.

The project will be based at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment on Loch Lomondside and at the Loughs Agency in Northern Ireland (approximately 50% time in each location). There will be a significant element of field work in this project.
