Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
The Northumbria Photovoltaics Applications Centre (NPAC) at Northumbria University has been performing world-leading photovoltaics (PV) research for over 25 years. A current focus is on the development of semiconductor nanostructures for use in PV devices that exceed current efficiency limits. These “third generation” PV devices offer a potential breakthrough in meeting current and future global electricity supply.
One approach to realising third generation PV devices is to create an intermediate band of quantum states within the semiconductor energy band gap using quantum dots. The objectives of this project are therefore to (1) characterise the optoelectronic properties of quantum dot layers for use in PV devices; (2) fabricate PV devices with integrated quantum dot layers; and (3) assess the performance of quantum dot solar cells.
The project has a strong experimental component and will involve using advanced materials characterisation facilities at NPAC. It will also involve close collaboration with researchers in the Semiconductor Physics Group at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge.

Applicants must hold a first or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in physics or a closely related subject. Students who are not UK/EU residents are eligible to apply, provided they hold the relevant academic qualifications, together with an IELTS score of at least 6.5. A strong interest in semiconductor physics and renewable energy from photovoltaics is essential.
You should apply using the University’s Research Application Form, available via the link on this page. Applications should be submitted to:
