About the Project

Applications are invited for a PhD in naturally or artificially excited plasmas within our solar system. The successful candidate will join the Space Plasma Environment and Radio Science (SPEARS) Research Group. The SPEARS group is internationally recognised and is at the forefront of the interdisciplinary field of space research, so a PhD with the SPEARS team promotes critical and creative thinking and is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to cutting-edge science in a field that is both exciting and economically relevant.

Research quality at Physics has won accolades nationally in 2008 Research Assessment Exercises (RAE), placing it on the top among all physics departments in the UK, and extending the lead of 2001 RAE where research at Physics was recognised as the best Department sharing the lead place with four other Universities including Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College. It is a part of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Lancaster, the top ranked university in the Northwest.

Funding Notes

Please note that this studentship is open to UK/EU candidates only. Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis and as well as covering the Home/EU fee, the successful applicant will receive a stipend to go towards living costs. Applicants must already have or be expecting to achieve in summer 2012 a very good honours degree (at least 2:1) in physical science. You must also have an enquiring mind and a deep interest in science as well as enjoying wrestling with challenging problems until they are solved.
