Structure of Neutron-Rich and Neutron-Deficient Exotic Nuclei at the Extremes

This project will study nuclei with extreme numbers of protons or neutrons, using a range of experimental and/or theoretical techniques, andwith a specific focus on a nucleus that highlights the important differences between exotic nuclei and those close to stability. The specific focus, which may be experimental or theoretical, will evolve at an early stage in the project, according to the student’s preferred emphasis and the scheduling at overseas laboratories. If there is a strong experimental focus, related experiments will typically be performed at several international facilities (e.g. GSI, CERN, GANIL, RIKEN, TRIUMF) during each year of the project. The project is aimed at revealing the structure of exotic nuclei via the exploitation of beams of radioactive nuclei, a field in which the Surrey group has established a leading international reputation. As for all projects within this group, the research will benefit from the uniquely strong interaction between nuclear theorists and experimenters that exists and is encouraged at Surrey.

The Department has over 80 PhD students, working on leading-edge projects in pure and applied physics. It is part of a Faculty Graduate School, offering a postgraduate skills development programme, and an annual conference for PhD students. The Department has a strong reputation for research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the majority of the Department's research was classified as either world leading or internationally excellent. Our PhD students have received recognition and accolades, for example, the 2012 Early Career Researcher Prize awarded by the Nuclear Physics Group of the UK Institute of Physics.

This project is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Only UK or UK-educated EU students are eligible for full (fees plus stipend) funding. Students from outside the EU are not eligible for this studentship.
