Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Obesity is defined as a state of excess adiposity accompanied by low-grade systemic inflammation and increased release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and is associated with an increased risk of developing several co-morbidities such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes and cancer. The numbers of obese individuals are expected to rise over the next 5-10 years, and so will the number of individuals with more than one chronic condition, creating new challenges for the management of these individuals. Limiting the onset of obesity complications is therefore very important. This project aims to investigate the cellular mechanisms by which obesity promotes CVDs and to improve anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant status via optimal nutrition. In particular, the study will examine the effect of inflammatory and oxidative stresses on endothelial cells and monocytes and how the micronutrient selenium could prevent the damaging effect and reduce the risk of obesity associated CVD. The project will involve: tissue culture; flow-cytometry, molecular biology and use of clinical samples. A background in biomedical science is required with a degree of laboratory experience.
Candidates should be highly motivated with a strong commitment to academic research. A First Class, or a 2.1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) or a Masters Qualification in a relevant discipline is required. Relevant professional experience will also be considered. Each studentship provides full university fees for UK/EU applicants and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £13,590 per annum for 3 years (UK Research Council Rates). The studentship is available to start in October 2012. Interviews will be held on the 7th / 8th June 2012. Further details can be obtained at http://www.rgu.ac.uk/research/graduate-schools/applying-for-a-research-degree/funded-studentship-opportunities.
