PhD Supervisor:
Application Deadline:
No more applications being accepted
Funding Availability:
Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) account for a large proportion of sickness absence and long-term incapacity in the UK, and the Oil & Gas sector can be particularly affected by this group of common conditions. This PhD studentship provides an exciting opportunity to develop and test a Brief Intervention for people with MSDs, aimed at reducing sickness absence and increasing productivity as a result of enhancing employee wellbeing in the Oil & Gas sector. The successful candidate will employ mixed methods to (1) Develop the Brief Intervention and its associated materials, and (2) Pilot the intervention and its evaluation. Based on the MRC guidance for the development of complex interventions (2008), the outcome of this studentship will inform the design of a large-scale evaluation of the Brief Intervention’s effectiveness. Applications will be considered from candidates with a background in the Allied Health Professions, Health Promotion, Nursing, Occupational Health, or a related field. Applicants should have an interest in musculoskeletal disorders and workplace health promotion and be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Candidates should be highly motivated with a strong commitment to academic research. A First Class, or a 2.1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) or a Masters Qualification in a relevant discipline is required. Relevant professional experience will also be considered. Each studentship provides full university fees for UK/EU applicants and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £13,590 per annum for 3 years (UK Research Council Rates). The studentship is available to start in October 2012. Interviews will be held on the 7th / 8th June 2012. Further details can be obtained at http://www.rgu.ac.uk/research/graduate-schools/applying-for-a-research-degree/funded-studentship-opportunities.
