Dr G Dearden Dr T Shenton  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

About the Project

Will form part of a large program of research funded by EPSRC and supported by Ford Motor Company and Cambustion, to carry out detailed scientific research aimed towards in-combustion event feedback control in laser ignition of IC engines.

This PhD will address detailed experimental work in laser engineering and optical techniques, while a companion study at Liverpool will address experimental work in IC engine control and diagnostics. A laser ignition and engine dynamometer research facility has been established at Liverpool which is instrumented with Ford test engines, lasers and ancillary test equipment. An additional companion study in Direct Numerical Simulation modelling will be undertaken at Newcastle University.

The student will liaise with our collaborating partner Ford Motor Company to incorporate the developing requirements in advanced IC engines technology in the project. The project student will develop in-demand, industry applicable, advanced application knowledge and skills.

The laser engineering studentship requires an engineering student from a background that includes knowledge and experience of physical optics to research optical techniques for laser beam delivery, modulation and diagnostics and to interface this with the IC test engine equipment. An interest in complementing practical experimentation with theoretical analysis and modelling of laser optics would be essential.

Funding Notes

The studentship is only open to UK students.

The studentships will be at the standard EPSRC rate.

Eligibility rules can be seen at http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/Pages/eligibility.aspx

Any students interested should contact Dr Geoff Dearden or Dr Tom Shenton (Co-Investigator) as soon as possible for further information.

Further information is available from Geoff Dearden ([Email Address Removed]) and Tom Shenton ([Email Address Removed]).

The closing date for applications, which should include a CV and letter of motivation, is 31st August 2012.
