About the Project
Cilia dysfunction within the respiratory tract is implicated in a number of respiratory conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, COPD and bronchiectasis.
Our group has recently developed the first detailed 3D model of human respiratory cilia ultrastructure using high resolution electron tomography. The student will use this model as a basis from which to study structural defects of cilia in disease, offering new insights into ciliary structure and function.
The student will be based within the national diagnositic service for the genetic inherited condition 'Primary ciliary Dyskinesia' at Royal Brompton Hospital and use the state of the art imaging facilities at Imperial College London. We will characterise known defects associated with ciliary dysfunction and envisage findings being directly translational to patient care.
No prior experience in electron tomography is required, although a keen eye for detail, accuracy and patience are key to this project.
Please feel free to get in contact for more details or to visit the department
