Investigations into the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria in the domestic environment

Prof Andrew McBain  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The aim of this fully-funded 3-year PhD is to develop a framework for considering antimicrobial resistance development in domestic bacteria. Bacteria occur in practically all environments including the home, particularly where moist surfaces are found such as kitchen and bathroom sinks, shower heads and food preparation surfaces.

The project will seek to understand potential influences upon the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria isolated from the home.

An important component of the research will be to design and operate laboratory models in which biofilm communities can be run over extended time periods. The project will also involve the determination of microbial composition and antimicrobial susceptibility using cutting-edge molecular techniques.

The Biofilm Research Group at the University of Manchester has substantial experience in this type of research and the successful candidate will be supported by an extensive team of microbiologists.

The studentship will provide full support for tuition fees, a minimum annual tax-free stipend of £13, 590 and cover all research expenses. The project is available to UK/EU nationals only due to the nature of the funding and is due to start October 2012. Research and technical skills within different in vitro systems as well as proficiency in physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modelling of the generated data will be developed.

Given the breadth of microbiology skills provided, such training would support progression into a variety of career positions within both academic and industrial settings.

Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a minimum upper-second honours degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, biochemistry, or a related biological/medical science subject.

Please direct applications in the following format to Dr Andrew McBain at [Email Address Removed]:
