PhD Opportunity – October 2012 or January 2013
The Medical Research Council Cancer Cell Unit is a leading centre for cancer research in the UK. Our aim is to undertake research into cancer biology that can be translated into clinical practice to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. The Unit is based within the Hutchison/MRC Research Centre on the Addenbrooke’s Hospital campus in Cambridge, and possesses excellent research facilities, strong collaborations with clinicians and colleagues in other disciplines, and a vibrant and supportive working environment.
We have a PhD opportunity for entry in October 2012 or January 2013 available in the following area:
Modelling tumour development and therapy
p53 function is frequently abrogated in human epithelial tumours as a result of point mutations within the p53 gene. While some mutations may simply result in loss-of-wild-type function, others may lead to gain-of-function or dominant negative properties and may even promote metastasis. It is still unclear how these mutations affect tumour development or how they may impact responses to therapy. The aim of this PhD project is to characterize distinct p53 mutants and identify potential therapeutic vulnerabilities of tumours harbouring such mutations. This project will involve the use a wide range of techniques including in vitro and in vivo tumour modelling, state-of-the-art in vivo imaging, molecular biology and microscopy. This PhD project is part of wider research programme aimed at developing improved cancer therapies. More information- http://www.mrc-ccu.cam.ac.uk/our_research/Carla_Martins/index.html

Funding Notes:
In addition to our outstanding research environment we offer a stipend of £16,000 pa.
We welcome applications from those holding, or expecting to obtain, at least an upper second class degree (or equivalent). These studentships are open to both UK and EU applicants (within the terms of MRC eligibility criteria). Successful applicants will be registered with the University of Cambridge.
