Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting a considerable number of people in the UK. The disease is characterised by progressive loss of memory, and the accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau in the brain. Current therapies are symptomatic only and eventually become ineffective and there is no cure. This project will investigate a novel monoclonal antibody that reduces amyloid pathology in model cell systems. The main aim of the project is to characterise the effects of the antibody on cognition using preclinical models of amyloid pathology.

The project will be co-supervised by Prof. Mark Good (School of Psychology) and Drs Emma Kidd and Rhian Thomas (School of Pharmacy).

Eligibility:
Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students. To be successful, you should possess or expect to obtain, a first-class or upper second honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area. A postgraduate Masters degree (or equivalent) would strengthen your application, but is not a requirement. Excellent literacy, numeracy and IT skills are required, in addition to good English language skills. Applicants from the UK or EU are eligible for a full award of stipend and tuition fees. This project will involve extensive work with preclinical models of amyloid pathology.

Funding Notes:

The studentship will commence in October 2012 and will cover tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant. In 2011-12 the maintenance grant for full-time students was £13,590. The award levels for 2012-13 have yet to be confirmed.
