PhD Research Project

Investigation of HOMs and Beam Dynamics in Spoke Mode and Elliptical Cavities for the ESS

Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

An opportunity exists for a fully funded Ph.D. studenship to pursue Accelerator Physics research on the ground-breaking European Spallation Source (ESS). The laboratory is designed around a linear accelerator (linac) in which protons are accelerated and collide with a heavy metal target. By this process, intensive pulses of neutrons are emitted and led through beamlines to experimental stations, where research on materials is done as part of the scientific front line in energy, telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation, information technology, biotechnology, and health. The study will have both experimental, simulation and experimental aspects to it and will be focused on beam dynamics issues for the main accelerating linac. This will be a unique opportunity to potentially influence the course of a major international facility –once complete, the ESS will become 30 times more powerful than existing facilities in the US and Japan.

The successful candidate will have first class or upper second class degree, or equivalent qualification, in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related discipline. Preferred skill requirements include a strong computing background. A demonstrably strong foundation in electromagnetism and mathematical physics would also be an advantage, although a comprehensive training program in accelerator physics will be offered by the Institute. The student will register at the University of Manchester.

Funding Notes:

This is funded by the ESS.
