The Weir Group plc (http://www.weir.co.uk/) is a leading Engineering Solutions business serving the Oil & Gas, Minerals and Power & Industry sectors. The Group’s global footprint covers over 70 countries, employing in the region of 13,000 people. Weir Group products include a wide range of industrial pumps, valves and ancillary equipment. The Weir Advanced Research Centre, WARC, was established by The Weir Group plc at the University of Strathclyde in 2011 as a multi-disciplinary research centre of excellence supporting development of innovative next generation Weir products.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates for a 3 year fully funded PhD Scholarship to investigate open and closed die forging processes to enhance product grain structure, homogeneity and fatigue performance. The research will combine experimental and numerical modeling approaches. Experimental work will be performed using state-of-the art facilities at the University of Strathclyde Advanced Forming Research Centre (http://www.strath.ac.uk/afrc/) and Advanced Materials Research Laboratory (http://www.strath.ac.uk/amrl/).

WARC PhD Scholarships

The Weir Group annually funds several WARC PhD Scholarships. These Scholarships provide an excellent personally-tailored support package enabling students to pursue PhD studies directly related to industry research needs within a professional engineering career structure.

Funding Notes:


• An annual stipend of £16,000 (tax free)
• PhD fees and associated costs
• The opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams from industry and academia in field and practical application of research outcomes
• A structured Personal Development Scheme targeted at early Professional accreditation (e.g. IMechE)
• Fully funded international travel to visit Weir Group companies (typically in Europe, USA & Australia)
