About the Project

"This exciting studentship will investigate the genetic, ecological and physiological basis of rapid phenotypic evolution in Scottish and Icelandic Arctic charr. In Iceland, many geographically and genetically isolated charr populations have independently evolved a phenotype characterized by small body size, a subterminal mouth and dark coloration, seemingly as adaptations for a common benthic niche [1, 2]. This ‘dwarf’ phenotype has a genetic origin and is accompanied by modifications in the expression of genes regulating growth [3] and in the number of muscle fibres developed during life [4]. Our unpublished data suggests that several genetically-distinct sympatric Scottish charr populations have also evolved parallel phenotypic adaptations to benthic and pelagic niches over equivalent short evolutionary timescales.

The successful candidate will employ cutting-edge 'sequence capture' and high-throughput sequencing technologies to acquire a massive set of targeted gene sequences in Scottish and Icelandic charr populations showing evidence of parallel phenotypic evolution. Population genomic and phylogenetic approaches will determine neutral and adaptive genetic variation with an emphasis on genes controlling growth, development and immunity. The student will be trained in using sequence-led experiments and bioinformatics for evolutionary analyses and will develop skills in the design and management of scientific experiments and in communicating science through written and other media. Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, an upper second class UK honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK.

Funding is available to UK and other EU nationals only (due to funding criteria, EU nationals MUST have resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship) and provides funding for tuition fees and stipend, subject to eligibility.
