1 of 2 Marie Curie Early Stage Research Fellows

(Modelling of Laser Beam Ablation)

Salary: £35,616 pa (plus allowances depending on circumstances
in accordance with Multi-ITN programme)

We are seeking to recruit 2 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs), i.e. PhD fellowship, to conduct research within the following projects in the field of numerical modelling of laser beam material processing and its applications.

Project 1: Modelling of footprints with varying laser beam characteristics

The aim of this project is to investigate the geometry (e.g. size, shape) of the laser spot varied by different laser beam characteristics (e.g. polarisation, beam mode) on different types (e.g. brittle and ductile) of materials. It is expected to develop an analytical footprint model for laser ablation with alternating laser beam characteristics for the purpose of different applications / materials used and investigate and optimise a method for ablated footprint measurement using different metrology systems.

You will be working with Dr Carol Kong on a European funded project in the area of energy beam processing to underpin work at the University of Liverpool. You will register for a 3 year PhD in the Centre for Materials and Structures within a Multi-Partner Initial Training Network (ITN) project, funded under the FP7 People program of the European Commission: A Synergetic Training Network on Energy beam Processing: from Modelling to Industrial Applications (STEEP). Note: You must satisfy the eligibility rules stipulated by the FP7 / Marie Curie ITN Guidelines of the European Commission. To check for eligibility to apply for a position, please see job description.

The post(s) is/are available from the Sep 2013 and is available for 36 months.
