About the Project

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to contribute to improving equine welfare through further investigation of modifiable risk factors for equine laminitis. This project, funded by World Horse Welfare, will be run collaboratively between the Animal Health Trust near Newmarket, where the student will be based, and the Royal Veterinary College, London, where the student will be registered for a higher degree.

Through the conduct of a large prospective cohort study, we aim to further improve our understanding of equine laminitis and potential strategies for prevention. The project will use web-based data collection methods and social media, in conjunction with modern epidemiological approaches, to identify modifiable risk factors for this debilitating condition.

Funding Notes

The study will form the basis of a 4-year full-time PhD programme and will provide an excellent opportunity for close involvement in equine welfare-orientated research. Applicants should have a veterinary or relevant biological sciences degree; previous experience of, or training in, epidemiological and/or clinical research will be beneficial. The scholarship will commence in October 2013 and an incremental tax-free stipend of £16,058 pa will be provided.
