About the Project

KESS Scholarship

Aberystwyth University are seeking to recruit a 1-year MPhil to work on a project entitled:
An examination of strategies for improving efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of egg production

Egg production has become much more important in Wales over the past five years. Egg producers are increasingly required to identify environmental impacts and resource usage. This studentship would involve the exploration of both technical and business dimensions of a particular egg supply chain.

The main focus of the study would be to assess the economic and environmental footprint of the production, logistics and distribution organisation, examining air, water and soil emissions, and solid wastes, taking into account environmental impacts embodied in inputs and those which also occur downstream in the supply chain. Collaboration with the company partner and its associated businesses will make available appropriate data for these analyses, and also provide an opportunity to jointly identify and develop innovations in supply chain management.

The project is in partnership with Wynnstay Plc as a major supplier of agricultural inputs and focal company involved in the egg supply chain. The student will be working with both the School of Management and Business and the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth University.

The prospective applicant should have a minimum of a 1st or good 2:1 in a relevant degree, and be available to take up the studentship by 1 October 2013. The prospective applicant should also not hold or currently be working towards a qualification at Master’s Degree level or higher. The project is partfunded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through the European Union’s Convergence programme administered by the Welsh Government. KESS scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners. (Applicants need only apply, they do not need to search for partners.)
