About the Project

A 3-yr University of Kent funded PhD studentship is available from 1st October 2014 in the laboratory of Dr. Neil Kad to understand how nucleotide excision DNA repair proteins locate and remove damage. Errors in DNA repair underpin severe diseases such as Cockayne syndrome and xeroderma pigmentosum, which lead to early onset ageing and a high propensity for skin cancer.

This project uses state-of-the-art single molecule techniques that allow protein complexes to be imaged interacting with single DNA strands in real-time. The project is wide ranging, from protein purification to imaging the interactions of quantum-dot labelled single molecules. The candidate will also learn to apply and develop new data analysis methods and develop new protein/DNA labelling strategies. Depending on the candidate, part of the project may involve assisting in the construction of new optical instrumentation. Our imaging laboratories are superbly equipped with custom-built imaging equipment and the School of Biosciences is well equipped for molecular biology and protein biophysics. We work in collaboration with a laboratory in the USA and therefore overseas visits to disseminate results may be possible.

Funding Notes

The studentship provides a stipend at current RCUK standard Home / EU rates of £13,863 per annum and covers Home / EU tuition fees. International applicants will have to meet the difference between Home /EU Fees and International Fees.
Candidates for this studentship must be awarded or expect a 1st class or high 2:1 BSc (Hons) degree, or MSc with merit/distinction. A background of Biology, Chemistry or Physics related subjects are encouraged. Candidates with experience in protein biophysics and preferably single molecule methods and/or DNA repair will be favoured.
