About the Project
Apolipoprotein E4 is a major risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease. We are advertising four individual studentships to examine diverse aspects of the biological and behavioural consequences of this risk factor. These are part of an Alzheimer’s Society Doctoral Training Centre and will be run within the Dementia Research Group at Sussex University (www.sussex.ac.uk/drg). The programme brings together researchers from the Schools of Psychology and Life Sciences exploring APOE effects on human cognition, animal models of cognition basic neurobiological mechanisms, and potential targets for treatment. The supervisors are members of Sussex Neuroscience www.sussex.ac.uk/sussexneuroscience.
Two studentships in the School of Psychology (please apply for PhD in Psychology)
Studentship 1 will explore the cognitive profile in young adult e4 carriers, and key modulators of that profile: contact Professor Jennifer Rusted for more information: [Email Address Removed].
Studentship 2 will develop an animal model, allowing longitudinal studies of behavioural effects of ApoE across the lifespan: contact Dr Sarah King for more information: [Email Address Removed]. Importantly, this studentship will commence in January 2016.
Two studentships in the School of Life Sciences (please apply for PhD in Biochemistry)
Studentship 3 will assess ApoE contribution to synaptic processing across the lifespan of the cell: please contact Professor Louise Serpell [Email Address Removed].
Studentship 4 will work with the Drug Discovery group to explore novel leads arising from the mouse and cellular findings, early stage target validation and drug efficacy testing: contact Professor John Atack for information: [Email Address Removed].
All the studentships will include stipend, fees and bench fees for 3.5 years and will commence in September 2015 except for studentship 2 under the supervision of Sarah King.

The studentships described above all link to the common theme of ApoE–related risk across the lifespan and will complement one another, in moving from human studies that explore the gene-environment interaction on ApoE-associated brain changes, to studies that will determine a more precise lifespan map of the brain changes, cellular studies that determine the mechanism by which ApoE associated changes manifest, and an innovative exploration of therapeutic intervention via ApoE genotype modulation. The supervisory teams are all internationally recognised scientists, their overlapping skills and expertise providing an interdisciplinarity and synergy between the four research projects. The students will be encouraged to meet regularly, to exchange and develop ideas together, and participate in joint research and journal club meetings several times/term. These will be run under the umbrella of Dementia Research Group
