About the Project

PhD Studentship in Advanced Polymer Composites Engineering

Engineered thermoplastic polymer composite filaments for through thickness reinforcement of laminated carbon fibre composites

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Engineered thermoplastic polymer composites. Candidates should hold, or expect to hold a first or upper second class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering or a cognate area. Applications will be considered on a competitive basis with regard to the candidate’s qualifications, skills experience and interests. Successful candidates will enrol as of 1 October 2015, on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. This is a great opportunity to join a dynamic research group working in close collaboration with industry (aerospace composites) and the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering Centre (NIACE). The first generation laminated composite primary structures are now flying, so there is an urgent need to develop new performance and a move away from the current 2D design strategies. The project is linked to a prestigious EPSRC funded research programme and will contribute to international partnerships/ projects.

Applicants should hold ordinary UK residence to be eligible for both fees and maintenance. Non UK residents who hold ordinary EU residence may also apply but if successful will receive fees only. The studentship will comprise fees and an annual stipend of £14,057 (subject to UK residence status). It will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory progress and is tenable in the Faculty of Computing and Engineering at the NIACE Campus.

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 31 July 2015

Interviews will be held in August 2015

The Research topic proposed must be in some area of Composites Engineering.
We are particularly interested in proposals within the following areas:
