About the Project

We are using the giant nuclei found in amphibian oocytes to explore the relationship between gene expression and nuclear organisation. A combination of factors means that oocytes contain nuclear structures with extraordinary levels of morphological detail, the best known of which are the giant lampbrush chromosomes. These chromosomes are unique in allowing the analysis of transcription sites with a clearly defined structure. This project wil aim to use the approaches of molecular cell biology to investigate the extent to which a more downstream aspect of eukaryotic gene expression, the processing of introns, is coupled to the transcription of particular nascent RNAs.

Funding Notes

UK and EU Applicants: Full (fees and living stipend of £13,290 pa) is provided in the form of studentships to selected candidates. Selection is based on best candidates applying to School. Although the vast majority of our home students are fully funded we have traditionally attracted a number of students willing to fund their own training.

Normally these studentships provide only tuition fees so applicants should be able to provide at least their own living expenses for the duration of the course.
