About the Project
SEPnet Studentship in Condensed Matter Theory (Dr. J Quintanilla)
Applications are sought for a PhD studentship in condensed matter theory funded by the SEPnet collaboration. The successful candidate will form part of an outpost of the University of Kent’s Functional Materials Group that is being set up by Dr. J. Quintanilla at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL).
The studentship is available to work on novel topological excitations in frustrated magnets (magnetricity and magnetic monopoles in spin ice). Other research topics in the group include: spontaneous deformations of the Fermi surface in strongly-correlated metals; unconventional superconductors; ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices; magnetic nano-structures; and quantum information. Applications are sought especially from candidates wishing to engage closely with experimentalists in these subjects. In particular, there will be opportunities to work with experimentalists at the ISIS neutron and muon source in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
The studentships are available starting 27th September 2010.
Candidates must hold a good Honours degree (First or 2i) or a Master’s degree in a relevant subject or equivalent.

Funding Notes
The studentship covers all fees for UK or EU students plus a stipend of £13,290 p.a. In addition a research training support grant of £1,200 p.a. will be awarded for travel or fieldwork.
