Dr D J Spence
Applications accepted all year round
Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
We are seeking a PhD candidate for a fully-funded scholarship to work at the MQ Photonics Research Centre, Macquarie University, Sydney.
We have recently proved the enormous potential of a deep ultraviolet laser based on cerium-doped laser crystals - a relatively new widely tunable solid state laser material that has been called the “Ti:Sapphire of the UV”. We have now been awarded a major grant to develop a completely new ultrafast laser platform based on cerium, capable of generating few-femtosecond pulses in the ultraviolet. A UV source of this kind will drive new applications in fields such as attosecond science, plasma physics, and ultrafast chemistry. Read more:

Using a combination of experimental work and numerical modelling, we will build the first ever femtosecond UV laser, and push this new platform to its limits. You will develop industry-relevant skills in non-linear optics, ultrafast lasers, and numerical modelling. You will work alongside a young and dynamic team of researchers within the well-respected MQ Photonics Research Centre. The university is 10km from the centre of the harbour city of Sydney.
Applicants should have an honours degree in physics or optical engineering or equivalent, preferably specialising in optics and photonics.
Prospective applicants should, in the first instance, submit a cover letter detailing relevant experience, a CV and an academic transcript to the principal supervisor, Dr David Spence: email: [Email Address Removed]. The cover letter must address why the applicant is interested specifically in this project.
Funding Notes
There is a full scholarship suitable for International students available for this project, at a stipend rate of $22,860 per year (tax exempt) for 3.5 years.
