Prof S Brody, Dr C O'Donnell  No more applications being accepted  Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The primary component of the project involves examining the psychological factors (characterological factors including defence mechanisms, emotional attachment, and other self-regulatory processes) associated with adults habitually eating specific foods that differ in their likely promotion or undermining of physical and psychological health. Associations with indices of body fat (and perhaps blood lipids) and other behaviours would also be examined.

There is also the possibility of applying for additional outside funding to conduct an additional project examining psychological and physiological effects of a nutritional supplement. Such an additional project might also have the potential to “top up” the student stipend.

Professor Brody, the Director of Studies, has over 160 publications, including some on psychological and physiological effects of a nutritional supplement (DOI: 10.1007/s00213-001-0929-6 AND DOI: 10.1016/S0006-3223(02)01329-X), association of body fat measures with intimate behaviours (DOI: 10.1111/j.1743-6109.2010.01722.x AND DOI: 10.1080/00926230490422368), and blood sugar level effects on cognitive processing (DOI: 10.1007/s00213-003-1722-5), and has also published on health aspects of defence mechanisms (DOI: 10.1111/j.1743-6109.2008.00786.x AND doi: 10.1258/ijsa.2009.009435 AND DOI: 10.1111/j.1743-6109.2009.01559.x) and emotional attachment (DOI: 10.1111/j.1743-6109.2011.02332.x).
