Computational modelling of granular flow with shear localisation in silos

Applications are invited for postgraduate research leading to a PhD degree in the area of computational modelling of granular materials undergoing large deformation and shear localisation. You will study in the Institute of Infrastructure & Environment and work within an active research group with a worldwide reputation in granular mechanics; single and multiphase modelling of granular processes using DEM, FEM, DEM-CFD methods; and experimental measurements with a focus on addressing scientific challenges in industrial solids handling.

This PhD project focuses on the quantitative modelling of silo discharge using continuum mechanics models and the finite element method. A suitable generalised continuum model, such as micropolar plasticity, will be adopted to model the large deformation inside the silo during discharge and show how localisation of deformation propagates with the onset of discharge. Appropriate values for the model parameters will be obtained through mechanical testing and the computational model will be evaluated against silo experiments. The results of the project will provide an improved prediction of the flow channel boundary in silo flow and provide an important insight into the redistribution of stresses and the interaction between the flowing solid and the lateral walls of the silo during discharge.
