The School of Biological Sciences at the University of Reading covers many aspects of modern biology. It has three divisions: Environmental Biology, Biomolecular Sciences and Applied Statistics. We comprise about 50 full-time academic staff with 200 other staff and about 180 research students. We are very well equipped and have excellent links with other University units and departments such as the Biocentre - concentrating on structural biology and post genomic technologies - the Centre for Advanced Microscopy, and the Centre for Agro-Ecological Research.
Life for postgraduates is very varied in the School and there is a strong social scene. Postgraduates are well looked after and integrated into research teams; project-based training is complemented by a varied programme of additional skills training. All students have a supervisory committee who will advise on their research, with a primary supervisor responsible for their day to day training and planning. We are well used to non-standard programmes in which, for example, students work away from the University to gain access to particlular resources or environments: ask us! Over 95% of our full-time students complete their theses within 4 years and many students publish important papers during their time with us. Employment prospects in academic, government or industrial research have been excellent.
