ESRC CASE Studentship:The Impacts of Tourism on Potable Water Supply: an Investigation of the South West of England.

Following the award of an ESRC CASE Studentship, the University of Exeter in partnership with South West Water is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified applicant for a doctoral studentship for three years to start in April 2010.

Water is an essential resource in the management of tourism, yet it is one that is routinely overlooked. This studentship aims to understand demand for potable water from businesses in the tourism sector in the South West of England. Specifically, it will explore the use of water among accommodation providers and visitor attractions in Devon and Cornwall as a means to assess their projected requirements in the future. Estimates of this nature are vital to water industry investment planning and informing the evidence base for policy in the areas of tourism, water resources and sustainable development. The project will employ a range of quantitative and qualitative methods and some knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS) may be useful.

Although you will be based primarily in the Business School, you will benefit from co-supervision with the School of Geography and from the chance to work closely with South West Water (SWW) as the project partner. SWW will support you in the further development of your social science skills and will offer you opportunities to network with key individuals in the utilities and tourism sectors. SWW will also provide practical and logistical support for the project.

To apply, you should be based in the UK or EU and qualify for a fees and maintenance award under the ESRC’s rules for residential eligibility (see http://www.esrc.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/Images/Guidance_mark_3%5B1%5D_tcm6-7186.pdf for details, especially paragraph 2.36 onwards, p10).

You should hold a good first degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Business and Management, Economics, Geography, Environmental Science, Resource Management, Operational Research) and have, or be about to obtain, a Masters degree in a relevant subject. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed an ESRC-approved programme of social sciences training at Masters level or equivalent. However, applications are welcome and will be considered from candidates with other Masters degrees and relevant experience. Preference will also be given to candidates who are able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in statistical analysis.

Funding Notes
UK/EU level fees will be paid, together with a maintenance grant that matches the standard ESRC rate for CASE awards (for 2009/10 this is £15,290). Please send copy of your CV, names and addresses of three referees and a brief statement outlining your academic interests and reasons for wishing to undertake this studentship of no more than 2 sides A4 (you should explain why your academic training is relevant to this project and your experience so far of conducting independent research), to Emma Roberts, University of Exeter Business School (E.Roberts@ex.ac.uk) marked with the reference, ESRC-SWW.

This is a readvertisement. Unsuccessful applicants from the previous round will not be considered and should not reapply.

For further information, or informal discussion about the position, please contact one of the project supervisors: Prof Tim Coles (t.e.coles@ex.ac.uk, +44-1392-724441) or Dr Suraje Dessai (s.dessai@exeter.ac.uk, +44-1392-722492).

Closing date for completed applications is Friday 29 January 2010. Interviews will be held on Tuesday 16 February in Exeter.
