Considering a PhD, but wondering what you'll actually get out of it? We've sat down with some of the UK's top academics to hear their experiences and thoughts on postgraduate study. Dr Francisco Diego Quintana is a Senior Teaching Fellow at University College London. Here he shares some advice for new students.
I chose to do a PhD in Astronomy because I am very interested in that area of science. I think that when you want to do something important in your career, you have to go to the higher level. That allows you to link with people, to link with researchers and to really contribute in a way that you wouldn’t do otherwise.
I encourage other students to do a PhD because they will be confronted with real challenges and real motivations. When you are pressurised to deliver more, you deliver more! The more you have to do, the more you do in the end and that will bring a lot of satisfaction.
If you decide to do a PhD, you really need to have a good motivation. It has to come from your heart. It has to come from very deep inside you and if you do that, you won’t have any problems. If you really want to do it, you will do it.
