Best of 2017 – Our Most Popular Blogs This Year

We hope that you’re enjoying the holiday period and looking forward to continuing your postgraduate plans in the New Year, whatever they may be.

At the end of a year that saw the release of more details on the UK’s new PhD loan scheme (due to be launched in 2018/19), the triggering of Article 50 and another general election, we’re looking back at FindAPhD’s five most popular blogs of 2017.

These posts cover several topics, from one woman’s story of how she won a PhD studentship through to a tongue-in-cheek look at the things that’ll (probably) happen during your PhD.

5. Picking the right university for your PhD

Drawing on her experience as a PhD student at King’s College London, Gaia Cantelli – one of our regular guest bloggers – wrote a handy step-by-step guide to choosing the right university for your PhD.

4. PhD applications – a guide

Unfortunately, PhD applications aren’t a particularly simple process: you’ll need a decent research proposal, academic references and plenty of time. But this blog broke the process down into stages, giving you an action plan to follow when making your application.

3. PhD Studentships

Guest writers are a really important part of our blog, and we’d like to thank all the contributors that wrote pieces for us this year.

In this blog, new PhD student Melanie Brown wrote about her personal experience of getting a dream PhD studentships, offering readers some useful tips for success.

2. 11 things that PhD students will probably relate to

Taking a slightly irreverent look at the PhD, 2017’s second most read blog covered some of the ‘landmarks’ that will happen during most PhD programmes.

From developing a strange kinship with your cat to being a bit of a disappointment at the local pub quiz, chances are PhD students will relate to a few things in this post.

1. PhD Proposal Mistakes

The research proposal is probably the most important part of your PhD application, which perhaps explain why this blog was so popular among our readers.

We took a slightly different route to the usual advice posts, instead naming some common pitfalls that’ll hopefully prove helpful when it comes to writing your PhD proposal.

We hope that you’ve found these posts (and the rest of the blog) useful. It’s now our second year of blogging, and it’s been great having you as readers.

We’ll return next year with more updates, advice and information on all things PhD, so make sure you check back in 2018.

Happy New Year from everyone at FindAPhD!
