The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Fellowship allows Indian PhD students to spend six to nine months at a U.S. university. It provides resources like a monthly stipend, visa assistance, and support for doctoral research.
Studying abroad for your PhD is a dream for many—new experiences, better research opportunities, and a chance to network with experts). Fellowships like the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship make all of this possible by covering the costs, so you can focus on your work, not your bank balance.

In this guide, I will explain everything you need to know about the fellowship. This includes eligibility, benefits, and tips for applying, so you can get started easily.
The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship is part of the Fulbright Programme, one of the largest exchange programmes worldwide, which operates in over 150 countries. This fellowship allows Indian PhD students to conduct research in the United States for six to nine months, fully funded. This means you do not have to worry about travel or health insurance costs.
In India, the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) manages the fellowship and also offers other scholarships, like the Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowship). Fun fact, both fellowships are named after India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

There’s another important part of any Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Fellowship application, which is the study plan and is comprised of three sections:
Don’t forget to list **three universities** in the USA where you’d like to undertake research, in order of preference. If you've established connections or received invitations from faculty there—mention it! Networking is key.
As part of your application, you need to fill out the FNDR Applicant Annexure (Word document). In this form, write down the name of your PhD thesis and the title of your project for the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship. You should also say when you plan to submit your thesis.
The annexure has a section where you can explain how your research will help people in the USA and India understand each other better. You can also mention any activities you want to take part in outside your research.
Mark your calendars! The deadline for submitting your application to the 2026-27 Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship is likely to be summer 2025. Come back for updates on this.
After applying for the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship, you'll be informed in late September if you're short-listed. Interviews for short-listed candidates occur in early October, focusing on academic credentials, research necessity in the USA, project merit, and leadership skills.
In late October, you’ll learn your nomination status and take the TOEFL exam. By December, the USIEF will submit candidates to the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for approval. Final decisions are made by March or April, with fellowships starting in August or September.
It doesn't end there, the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship has a few other siblings. Well, Fulbright scholarship schemes to be exact, such as the Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships and the Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.
These fellowships help Indian teachers, researchers, and professionals to teach or conduct research at a U.S. college or university. Depending on the host institution, you may also be able to help create courses, lead workshops and seminars. These fellowships last from four to nine months and the deadline is usually in July before the academic year starts. There are a number of fields that applicants are only considered in. application online.
Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are for Indian PhD graduates who finished their doctorate within the last four years and are starting their research careers. The fellowships last from eight to 24 months and cover the same subjects as the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships.
The deadline for the 2025-26 fellowship has passed, but applications for the next academic year will likely open in summer 2025. For more information, check out the Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.
Please note that you can only apply for one Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship in the same academic year.
Now that you've got the tools to kickstart your application, allow me to give you some extra nudges to succeed:
Start your application early! As tempting as it is to procrastinate and I have definitely been there before, you’ll be thanking yourself later when you’re not scrambling at the last minute. There is a lot to put together for your application like your study plan which needs to be clear and show how it benefits both India and the U.S. My advice, think of it as your chance to prove you’re the academic superhero the world needs.
Reach out to U.S. institutions early — a letter of invitation can be a game-changer. And when writing your personal statement, don’t just list achievements—let your passion and goals shine through. This is your time to explain why the fellowship fits into your big picture.
Pick recommenders who know your work well. It's like assembling the Avengers for your academic team—choose wisely. Since the fellowship emphasises mutual benefit, highlight how your research will connect both countries. Finally, stay organised. Trust me, nothing good happens when you're working on zero sleep and too much coffee.
Best of luck, and may the research gods be with you!
